Ministry of Culture Opens Registration for 18th Edition of Al Burda Award

The Ministry of Culture has announced the opening of registration for the 18th edition of Al Burda Award. The Award recognises creativity in Islamic art and culture and pays tribute to Arabic language and its pioneers.
In its 18th edition, the award will explore the theme of ‘Al Noor’ (The Light), inspired by verse 15 of Surah Al-Ma’ida {There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book}, referring to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Holy Quran, who was sent to deliver the divine message that illuminates the path of humanity and guides them to good. The light embodied in the message of the Prophet serves as a beacon of truth and virtue for humanity.
His Excellency Sheikh Salem Bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture, said: “Since its inauguration in 2004, Al Burda Award has brought together the best in Islamic arts from all over the world and showcased it in the UAE. The awards recognize the importance of preserving and celebrating Islamic cultural heritage through a diverse range of works by participating artists from across the world.”
His Excellency added: “Al Burda Award has been instrumental in fostering rich cultural exchanges. It celebrates the artisanry of practitioners from the Islamic world and their dedication to preserving our shared cultural legacy. By bringing together diverse representations of art and culture from various geographical and cultural backgrounds, the award helps us better understand the far-reaching impact of Islamic art and the seamless integration of traditional elements into contemporary forms.”
Al Burda Award encompasses three main categories: Poetry, Arabic Calligraphy, and Ornamentation. This year, three new sub-categories have been introduced, which include: Poetry: Classical, Nabati, and free verse; Arabic Calligraphy: Classical, Contemporary, and Typography Design; Ornamentation: Traditional and Contemporary.
Winners in each of the three main categories will be awarded a prize of AED 210,000 which will be distributed among the top five winners. The winners in the new sub-categories including free verse poetry, Arabic typography, and contemporary ornamentation, will each receive a prize of AED 160,000.
The new categories have been introduced to encourage youth participation and offer them an opportunity to produce innovative contemporary artworks. These works combine contemporary art methods with Islamic arts by utilizing modern technology and contemporary art styles in the fields of calligraphy, ornamentation, and free verse poetry writing.
Launched in 2004 to commemorate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Al Burda Award has become a global Emirati platform that celebrates Islamic arts and the rich aesthetic of the Arabic language.
The UAE has been steadfast in its efforts and support in preserving the artistic heritage of the Islamic civilization and promoting exceptional art to a global audience. The award underscores the UAE’s prominent role in supporting Islamic arts.
Poets, artists and calligraphers interested in participating in this year’s edition of Al Burda Award can register at https://burda.ae/en/ and submit their works electronically from now until September 30, 2024. The Ministry will receive artworks for the Calligraphy and Ornamentation categories from October 1-15, 2024.
